How to Remove an Abandoned Car from Private Land

Believe it or not, if someone abandons a vehicle on your private commercial property, removing it yourself could land you in hot water with local authorities. Since passage of The Protection of Freedoms Act of 2012 only certain authorised bodies may remove abandoned vehicles on private land, and even then, they may only do so after confirming the vehicle is actually abandoned using specific legal criteria. If you want to know how to remove an abandoned car from private land, read on.

MS Webb Abandoned Vehicle Removal Service

If someone has apparently abandoned a vehicle on your private property, you won’t be able to call a wrecker and have it removed. First, you will need to ensure the vehicle is actually abandoned. That can be quite an involved process for those who have never done it before. In such cases, MS Webb’s abandoned vehicle removal service is the smart choice.

We help homeowners and businesses remove abandoned vehicles effectively and affordably. We conduct all necessary searches, contact the Registered Keeper, provide proper notice of intent to remove the vehicle and if the Registered Keeper does not respond, we arrange to have the vehicle removed and scrapped. All in accordance with relevant laws and regulations.

Determining if a Vehicle Has Been Abandoned

Determining if a vehicle has been abandoned requires we ask the following questions:

  • How long has the vehicle been on your property?

  • Are one or more of the tyres flat or missing?

  • Are the windows broken?

  • Have parts been removed from the vehicle?

  • Is there water damage to the interior?

  • Have weeds grown up around the vehicle?

  • Is there a significant amount of rust on the vehicle?

If the vehicle has been on your property for more than 3 weeks and we get affirmative answers to 3 or 4 of the other questions we can safely assume the vehicle has been abandoned. If that is the conclusion, we proceed to:

  • Place abandoned vehicle notices on the vehicle.

  • Conduct a DVLA search to determine the Registered Keeper.

  • Provide written notice to the Registered Keeper that we intend to remove the vehicle in 21 days.

  • Remove the vehicle and have it scrapped if the Registered Keeper fails to act.
